The Negative Idea of Joy

A companion posted the screen capture underneath on his WhatsApp status today and I promptly recalled a statement by Titus Lucretius Carus which made me see the negative idea of satisfaction;

To remain at the shore and to see the captain in trouble,

Not that we like to see someone else in torment,

But since it satisfies us to realize that we are liberated from this malevolence.

It isn’t that we appreciate another person’s disaster, however that their incident goes about as a token of how lucky we seem to be, and empowers us to feel satisfied about it.
